P.Eng licensure in Saskatchewan

How to Get Your P.Eng in Saskatchewan (APEGS)

In Saskatchewan, engineering graduates first register with APEGS as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), the required first step toward the P.Eng. You then build at least four years of assessed engineering experience, pass the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE), and complete a competency-based assessment validated by qualified colleagues and supervisors before converting from member-in-training to Professional Engineer.

The licensing exam

The NPPE is required: a remote-proctored, closed-book exam of 2.5 hours with 110 multiple-choice questions on professionalism, law, and ethics. EITs are eligible to write it. It is offered five times in 2026.

Experience requirement

A minimum of 48 months (four years) of engineering experience confirmed by validators and assessed through competency-based assessment. Lay-offs and leaves do not count, and at least 6 months of experience must fall within the two years immediately before you submit your assessment. The assessment uses a confidence-based approach across seven competency categories.

Fees (APEGS)

Engineer-in-Training application feeOne-time, GST added. The later conversion to Professional Engineer is a separate $100.$200.00
NPPE exam feeOne-time; excludes a 15% administration fee and 5% GST.$145.00
Annual P.Eng dues$85 membership plus $365 licence, before 5% GST. Member-in-Training annual dues are $350.$450.00

Amounts in CAD, as of June 2026. Fee schedules change, so confirm the current fees with APEGS.

How long it takes

Plan for at least four years as a member-in-training, since 48 months of assessed experience is the binding requirement. The EIT application is processed in about a month and the competency assessment is targeted within 90 days, so most graduates reach P.Eng in roughly four to five years end to end.

Continuing professional development

APEGS runs a mandatory CPD program for all active registrants, including members-in-training. Members must obtain a minimum of 30 CPD credits per year (at least 12 verifiable), earn credits in at least 2 categories, complete one hour of verifiable ethics training, and report through APEGS Central.

References and validators

The competency-based assessment requires a minimum of four validators, at least two of whom must be a P.Eng, P.Geo, or equivalent (normally including your supervisor). A single validator can verify multiple competencies; for international experience, validators must hold a four-year engineering or geoscience degree.

Step by step: EIT to P.Eng in Saskatchewan

  1. 1Create an APEGS Central account and complete the member-in-training self-assessment.
  2. 2Apply and register as an Engineer-in-Training, confirming you meet the academic requirement (a CEAB-accredited degree, or an academic assessment for international graduates).
  3. 3Work under direct supervision and accumulate at least 48 months of engineering experience, recording it in the experience system.
  4. 4Nominate validators (minimum four, at least two P.Eng/P.Geo) and submit competency examples for assessment.
  5. 5Register for and pass the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE).
  6. 6Once experience is validated and the NPPE is passed, apply to convert from member-in-training to Professional Engineer and pay the registration fee.
